“Be the change you wish to see in the world” ~ the real meaning behind this famous quote.

As the world around us appears to be falling to pieces, we wonder what’s happened and what we can do to bring peace to our broken planet. This was forefront in my mind today, as I searched the internet for inspiration on today’s Motivation Movement article. Fate drew me to this article “Gandhi didn’t actually ever say “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Here’s the real quote…” written by Joseph Ranseth, a speaker, author and transformationist. It discusses the famous quote by Gandhi and the real meaning behind these famous words. It was absolutely perfect.

“And while all of this “be the change” talk is good counsel, if we dig a little bit deeper, we realize that he wasn’t just telling us to lead by example, or to not get caught up in other people’s business while we still have our own issues to deal with.” ~ Joseph Ranseth

This, oh so famous, quote “BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD”, is attributed to Gandhi, but Mr. Ranseth indicates Gandhi didn’t actually speak these famous words. The actual quote and meaning is much deeper. Before we get to that deeper meaning however, we should discuss why the notion of “be the change” is such a powerful one. Mr. Ranseth indicates three reasons for this. It:

  1. removes judgmental thinking from our minds.
  2. turns us away from complaining and toward self-transformation.
  3. creates a desire to transform the only part of the world which we control: OURSELVES.

If Gandhi didn’t speak those famous “be the change” words, what did he actually say?

“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” – Mahatma Gandhi

This quote speaks deep-rooted spiritual knowledge that we see the world as a reflection of the world within. The world is a mirror for how we view ourselves. In this full quote, Gandhi is guiding us to do the work of self-transformation. In most cases, we want to avoid facing ourselves, transforming ourselves. After all, who wants to do that? It’s so much easier to lash out at the world and blame others for our own problems and failings in life, but that’s not the answer.. There is no doubt that our world is broken. However, Gandhi is indicating here, if we want to change that world, and fix it, we need to look in the mirror, and fix ourselves first. We need to take a deep, long look in that mirror and cleanse ourselves of selfishness and insecurity.

“I try to make myself zero.” ~ Gandhi

Mr. Ranseth indicates, when Gandhi was asked how he gained so much power over the British empire he said: “I TRY TO MAKE MYSELF ZERO”. What does this mean exactly? This means to develop “selfless love” in every aspect of our lives. We only do things for the benefit of others, never for ourselves. In other words, we make ourselves zero.

Closing thoughts:

The current unrest in the world appears as the act of a society that is lost and in desperate need of direction and guidance. It’s easy to lash out at world leaders and a broken system and demand change. We must remember, that broken system was built by flawed individuals, just as lost as everyone else. Until we look in the mirror, and reflect on our own selfishness and insecurity, nothing will change. The current hate and violence, so prevalent around the world today, speaks volumes about how people view themselves. Now, more than ever, we must face the MAN IN THE MIRROR.


This is my final post for awhile. My family and I are moving across the country. We will be leaving my current home in Virginia at the end of July, and traveling to Colorado to begin a new chapter of our lives. After much thought and consideration, I have decided to halt blog posts until after we get settled in Colorado. I am hoping to be back at the beginning of September, but am uncertain about this timeframe. I’ll keep you posted. I really hate to pull back, but I believe it’s necessary, in order to focus on my family and this important change in our lives. Don’t go anywhere! I’ll be back!

The Motivation Movement: Anyway… (The REAL version!)

I am a bit under the weather today, so, I’m reposting this article. It was initially posted on my blog in January, 2017. The poem “Anyway”, continues to be a source of inspiration for me. This article discusses the true origins of this poem, which is normally attributed to St. Teresa of Calcutta. I hope you enjoy this repost.

The Original Article

Today’s inspiration was born on August 26, 1910 as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu  in Macedonia. You know her as Mother Teresa of Calcutta, founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016.

There is a “poem” circulating that is often attributed to Saint Teresa. This poem goes by many names: Anyway, Do It Anyway or Final Analysis. In my research into Saint Teresa and the origins of this poem, I discovered this “poem” was actually a sign hung in Shishu Bhavan, Saint Teresa’s children’s home in Calcutta.** This sign contained the “Paradoxical Commandments” and the author is actually unknown.

7 Scientific Benefits of Helping Others | Mental Floss

Many of you may wonder why my blog, with a focus on nutrition and whole body health and wellness, focuses so strongly on helping others. When I think of “whole body health”, I don’t just think of the physical body. My motto is “Food for the body, mind, and soul.” Therefore, my blog focuses on three aspects of health.

  • Physical health – Whole food nutrition/recipes, nutrients, avoid processed food/toxins, yoga, fitness
  • Mental health – Stress relief,  inspiration, motivation, joy, laughter
  • Spiritual health – meditation, mindfulness, prayer

This may be considered a broad scope for a blog, however, for an individual to be truly healthy, attention should be paid to all three. Thus, my blog covers all three, in an effort to bring these important issues to your attention. What affects one, affects the others. For example, some of the things on the list above, fall into multiple categories:  stress relief, also falls under physical health; meditation falls under all three, as does laughter and mindfulness. Poor nutrition and toxic foods can also affect our mental health to a strong degree. I consider all three areas intertwined. You cannot separate them. For a body to be healthy and balanced, you need all three.

So, where does helping others fall on this list? What if I told you it falls into all three? An article, published on Mental Floss, discusses 7 scientific benefits of helping others. These include:

  1. Helps you live longer – People who volunteer/help others have shown an increased ability to manage stress, fend off disease and have reduced rates of depression.
  2. It’s contagious – Research has found that people are more likely to express generosity, after seeing others perform similar tasks
  3. Makes us happy – Some scientists tracked 2000 people for 5 years. They found that people who described themselves as “very happy” volunteered an average of 5.8 hours per month.
  4. Reduces chronic pain – One study revealed that chronic pain was relieved in people who became peer volunteers.
  5. Lowers blood pressure – Scientists studied a group of older individuals who volunteered 200 hours  per year. They found these individuals decreased their risk of high blood pressure by 40%.
  6. Promotes positive behavior in teens – One researcher found that teens who volunteer have a positive self-image and improved grades.
  7. Gives us a sense of purpose – Studies show this is particularly true with “empty nesters,” and “retirees”.

So, the next time you see me posting inspiring articles about non-profits, or amazing individuals who help others, keep these 7 things in mind. When you help others, you not only help them, but you help yourself and all of society.

It’s my blogiversary! Here’s my first post ~ Do you hold onto your anger?

Hello all! One year ago today, I officially got my blog up and running to where it is today. I had actually started my blog about 18 months prior to this date, but was too scared to do anything about it. Prior to this date, I had reblogged some recipes, on occasion,  but didn’t write any of my own articles prior to this one. I had a small handful of followers, 5  I think, who followed me at that time, and they are still with me today.

For some reason, after talking to my family, I finally got up the nerve to write my own article. So, a year on, I have gone from 5 followers to over 1800 followers! This is better than in my wildest dreams. Thank you all so much for following me. Please know that I appreciate each and every one of you.  Before I get to the article. I wanted to share this lovely poem with you. It is my prayers and wishes for each of you.

Holding onto your anger, can be detrimental, not only to your sanity and peace of mind but to your body. Yes, learning about stress, and its affect on the body has been part of my studies in school. With what’s going on in our country right now, I thought it would be a good focus for a quick blogpost.

Your body reacts to ANY anger, fear or stress the same way it would if a tiger was chasing you. It goes into survival mode, and into what’s known as “fight or flight” mode. Your body releases sugar for energy, increasing glucose levels, while raising your blood pressure and breathing. Meanwhile, it shuts down or suppresses your digestive and immune systems, among other things. Feel Good Friday: When Giving Is All We Have

Here is a Feel Good Friday post from April…One of my first ones. Enjoy!

To give…

Two short words, but they pack a powerful punch. What does it mean to give?  Does it mean more when we give everything we have, to help other people, or is the act of giving enough, as long as it comes from the heart?

Picture this scene… Two men are standing on a busy street corner in New York City, one cold, snowy winter day, waiting for the stop light to turn.  Bright yellow taxis are streaming by, honking. The first man is very wealthy, dressed impeccably in designer clothes and shoes. The second man is homeless, wearing a dirty and torn camouflage jacket, over a red hooded sweatshirt and baseball cap.

While they are waiting, a young mother, with two toddlers in tow (a boy and girl), approaches them, asking for money.  “We don’t have a place to live and my children are so hungry. I’ll take anything you have…PLEASE.” 

The rich man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a new, crisp $20 bill, and hands it to her, smiling.

The homeless man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a dirty and crumpled $1 bill. Then, without hesitation, hands it to her, his face beaming with pride.  

She thanks them both and walks away.

Was either man’s gift better? Was the rich man’s gift better, because it was more money? Was the homeless man’s gift better, because it was all he had in the world? Were both gifts good, because the men gave from the heart and helped the young woman?

At the end of the day, they both made the young woman happy. They both helped her. Perhaps, she was more appreciative to have the $20. However, the homeless man could have just said “No, I’m sorry, I don’t have anything to spare“, but he didn’t do that.

Maybe, just maybe…the homeless man is just as rich as the wealthy man, because he gave everything he had in the world. Why would giving everything you have, make you rich?

To help illustrate this point, I have included this heartwarming video. In the video, a son is embarrassed by his father, wishing his father was rich. He later realizes just how rich his father really was (be prepared for tears!) :


Why do we give? What do we get out of it? We give, because we can and because it makes a difference. It sends out ripples in the pond of life, helping whomever it reaches.

We give…because it makes us happy


that makes us the richest people in the world.

Meditation Monday: Grounding Meditation (AKA: Earthing) with Free Guidebook

What if you could sit on the grass in your backyard, enjoying the sun during the day, or moon at night, and heal inflammation throughout your body?

When I was a child, my sister and I went barefoot all summer. No matter where we went, no matter what we were doing, we were barefoot. Little did I know, I was sending healing energy throughout my body all summer long.

About a year or so ago, I watched a documentary called GROUNDED,  which discusses the concept of GROUNDING OR EARTHING. This documentary was my introduction to grounding. I hope you can take the time to watch it.  In the movie, a small town in Alaska experiments with grounding and documents the healing that occurs.

I just rewatched it today, for the first time in a year, and forgotten just how phenomenal it this film truly is. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone, ESPECIALLY if you are a skeptic to the concept of grounding. This film just may change your mind. (The ending just may bring a few tears to your eyes! 😉 ) Here it is:

Grounding is the concept of connecting to the Earth’s energy, usually by walking barefoot on the earth. Basically, when we connect with Earth’s energy, we absorb that energy, which destroys damage causing free radicals in the body.

I like to combine stone stacking meditations and grounding into one. So, basically, I do my meditations/stone stacking outside, when possible, with bare feet. This way, I enjoy the benefits of meditation and the benefits of grounding into one practice. Daily Inspiration-The Hat Man

“We should all be so driven!” ~ Morrie’s daughter Karen

Morrie Boogaart, aka The Hat Man, 91 years old, is spending the last part of his life, helping those in need. You see, Morrie is in hospice, after being diagnosed with kidney and skin cancer.  Instead of worrying about his own problems, Morrie spends his entire day knitting hats for the homeless. Even though he’s bedridden, he’s using his hands to help those in need before he dies. At last count, he has knitted over 8000 hats for those in need. Here’s his story.

Each Meditation Monday, I’ve featured a meditation video. It occurred to me today that many of you may not be familiar with or know how to meditate.
