Hibiscus tea is made from the hibiscus flower. According to my research, the tea is sour and sometimes called “sour tea”, with  a flavor slightly reminiscent to cranberry.

Going into this week of covering different types of tea, I assumed that matcha tea  probably had the highest anti-oxidant content. But, after watching a video from nutritionfacts.org, I may have been mistaken. Could Hibiscus be healthier?

According to the video, a study done in 2011 on the anti-oxidant content of 3100 foods, shows that HIBISCUS TEA has a higher anti-oxidant content than MATCHA TEA!

Yes, you read that right.

The study looked at the anti-oxidant content of  283 beverages.

The video reviewed a few, here’s how they scored: (1)

  • Scoring 0
    • water
    • Red bull

Tulsi tea, also known as Holy Basil, has been used in Ayurvedic medicine in India for thousands of years (1,2). It is considered the most popular beverage in India. In fact, it’s so common that many families in India grow the plant in their homes. (2)

The main health benefit for Tulsi/holy basil is that it is an adaptogen. An adaptogen is “a non-toxic substance that will increase your resistance to stress…fatigue…anxiety, and trauma.” (2)

See the infographic and today’s 1 minute video below for other health benefits.

Until next time…

Namaste my friends.

1 minute videos: Health Benefits of White Tea

This week for 1 minute videos,

I’m focusing on some of the world’s healthiest teas.

Today…White Tea

White tea is also called “virgin tea”, because it is the least processed tea available. The tea leaves are “young” leaves, which are picked from the plant at about 8 days growth. This is peak time for nutrients and anti-oxidants, as well as flavor. Basically, the leaves are simply picked and dehydrated, without any further processing.

See the infographic and video below for the health benefits of white tea.

Until next time…

1 minute videos: Health Benefits of Rooibos Tea

This week for 1 minute videos,

I’m focusing on some of the world’s healthiest teas, beginning with my personal favorite:

(HINT: It’s the base for the detox tea I’ve been drinking!)

I lived in England for almost 4 years. During that time, I learned to love their wonderful and delicious British tea, realizing just how poorly we Americans make tea. We’re coffee drinkers after all! I actually don’t like coffee! I’m a tea drinker all the way and always have been.  Upon my return to the states, I was spoiled by the robust and delicious nature of British tea and missed it dearly. I did find some actual British tea in an international grocery store, for which I was extremely grateful. Then I had to give up (or at least cut back on) caffeine, and decaf black tea just isn’t the same.

(I’m a bit of a tea snob if you can’t tell).

In one of my first courses in school, I learned of the health benefits of herbal tea.  One of the assignments in that class was to research different herbal teas, try some of them and report on the experience, including the health benefits. I tried MANY, MANY, MANY, but found them all to be weak, and flavorless, tasting remarkably like hot water, compared to the robust black tea to which I had become accustomed.

That’s when I discovered ROOIBOS TEA.

The taste is very similar to black tea, but with a slightly woodsy taste. It’s delicious! AND, it’s super healthy and considered by many to be healthier than green tea, but without the caffeine. It has become part of my daily routine, and has replaced my soda addiction!

(A HUGE step! If you are a follower of mine, you’ll know just how huge!)

Here’s the 1 minute video for today, highlighting the benefits of Rooibos Tea.

Until next time…

Namaste my friends.
