Kindness Counts: Spread the Love

Hello everyone! I’m back from my 2 week hiatus from blogging. I can tell you I definitely missed it. Being away from my blog helps me realize just how much I love blogging/writing and keeping in touch with my blogging family.

So the first week I took off to get caught up on homework. Which I did…in a way. I got my assignment turned in with a few minutes to spare, but was unable to get all of my reading done. My son was home with a cold/flu/something, and my focus was on him. I meant to also get my newsletter(s) out, but that got pushed to the back burner as well.

My goal was to come back on February 4, but I was called to Federal Jury Duty. I knew a while ago that I would be on call for jury duty for 2 weeks, beginning on February 2, but didn’t know when I’d have to go. As it turns out, I was called in on Monday, February 4, the day I was supposed to return. Luckily, I didn’t get chosen for the jury. The trial was quite big and long, lasting at least 3 weeks! Jury selection took 2 days, putting me further behind on my homework/reading/assignments and blog newsletters. I’m still on call for the remainder of this week, but hopefully, I won’t have to go back in.

So, anyway, here I am, back in the swing of things. I am caught up on reading for my current unit, but have an assignment due tomorrow night. Ah, at least life is never boring.

Well on with the article. With Valentines day coming up on Wednesday, I felt the theme of “spreading the love” was a fitting way to celebrate Kindness Counts** for this month.

“One day I stepped into a cafe to charge my cell phone. I saw the barista hand a customer a cup of coffee with a smile and say, “You have a wonderful day now!” I also noticed the silence as the woman took her coffee, walked out, and didn’t cast a glance at the barista. I recognized my opportunity. After all, that is what kindness is: an opportunity. I fumbled within my bag, pulled out a kindness card and handed it to the barista. “This is for you!” She hesitantly took it but as she read the card, her smile returned. 

“Tag, you’re it! You’ve been spotted performing an Act of Kindness! Now it’s your turn to keep your eyes peeled and pass this along the next time you catch someone in the act!” With that I handed her a stack of cards. “Pass these along to customers that are particularly kind,” I said. Ignoring kindness can cause one to question whether it matters, and whether they matter. On the other end of the spectrum, it’s truly extraordinary how simply acknowledging an act of kindness can and will inspire a person to continue seeking out those opportunities.”

Closing thoughts:

How do you “spread the love”? It doesn’t have to be anything big, or bold or even expensive. It can be simple, such as holding the door for someone, or letting someone go ahead of you at the checkout line. Maybe you’re on the subway and like an outfit someone is wearing, TELL THEM! Who cares if you don’t know them? You just may make their day. AND, they just may pass on some kindness to others, because of what you said or did.

  1. Give someone a compliment
  2. Send a postcard to sick children. Go to Cards for Hospitalized Kids
  3. Make little gift baskets for the kids in your neighborhood.
  4. If you’re an Amazon.com customer you can donate Amazon.com’s money to your favorite U.S. nonprofit through Amazon Smile.
  5. “When you buy goods from over 1,700 other online retailers you can use iGive to have that retailer donate money to your favorite charity. This includes major retailers like Best Buy, Expedia, Bed Bath and Beyond, and others.” (1)
  6. Help a teacher get the supplies needed for class. DonorsChoose.org
  7. Collect soda can tabs to donate to Ronald McDonald House for sick children and their families.
  8. Cook an extra portion of dinner (or dessert) for someone who needs it. Aid for Friends is a Philadelphia area nonprofit that delivers about 500,000 meals yearly to people in need. It started with one woman’s small acts of kindness. She made an extra meal each night to give to someone who needed it. Read her amazing story.” (1)
  9. “Write letters to strangers who need them. More Love Letters has a list of people who could benefit from letters of encouragement. Each person has been added to the web site by a friend or family member.” (1)
  10. “Send cards to lonely seniors. 13-year-old Jacob Cramer started Love for the Elderly, which distributes letters to American seniors via senior centers and nonprofit organizations. This page explains how you can send a postal letter.” (1)

While spreading love is important, I think it’s just as important to acknowledge when others are acting in a kind way, as Orly says in her reflections. You can perform a kind act simply by acknowledging the kind act of another person. As Mother Teresa says in the above quote, everyone you encounter in your life, should leave a happier person.

Kindness Counts: Do something drastic…cut the plastic!

Today’s Kindness Counts is something near and dear to my heart, mainly because my son is so passionate about this topic, saving the oceans from plastic  pollution.

There are now eleven ocean garbage patches in oceans around the world, destroying our environment and killing marine life. The biggest is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is 270,000 square miles, approximately the size of Texas.

The plastic breaks down into tiny pieces, which the animals mistake for food. Five species are in danger of dying out, due to this plastic overload (2):

Did you know, if you use just 1 reusable grocery bag, you save 6 plastic bags from getting into the environment? That equates to 22,176 bags in a lifetime. If just 20% of the people in our country would do this, we would save 1,330,560,000,000 bags over our lifetime.

“But I recycle my plastic bags!” I hear many people say. Did you know that only 1% of our plastic bags are recycled AND it costs more to recycle plastic bags, than it does to make new ones?  Watch this short video (3:46) for more info/facts on plastic pollution.

Orly is absolutely right. Using a cloth grocery bag may be a very small gesture in the grand scheme of life, but these little gestures add up, especially if we all work together. In closing, I’d like to share this song with you called PLASTIC OCEAN. ENJOY!

Happiness Is…

I hail from the great state of South Dakota. If you are familiar with my blog, you’ll know that I have a second, very small blog about spirituality called My Walk in the Woods. Today’s prayer comes from that site.

Since things are a bit “messed up” in our world right now. I thought I would share some American Indian prayers. If you read my other blog, you’ll know that I lived on the Rosebud Indian Reservation for a while. I learned so much from these beautiful people. You can read about that HERE. The first prayer for today is The Great Spirit Prayer. This is a prayer to help you be strong, peaceful, respectful and compassionate with yourself, other people and the Earth.

This isn’t as much a prayer, as it is a reminder. I saw this poem long ago, as a teen, who loved to collect poetry. When I found it, on the internet, in my search for a prayer for today, I knew it was meant to be. This lovely little poem reminds us that we are never too busy to pray. Taking time to pray, can help you through the roughest times in your life. God bless everyone! 🙏
