I grew up eating delicious German food, cooked lovingly by my amazing Grandmother. This week, I’ll be highlighting some wonderful recipes from this wonderful part of the world.

The recipes will be coming from the Youtube channel

All Tastes German.

This Youtube channel, and website, ” is dedicated to teach how to cook authentic, traditional and modern German recipes.” So, let’s get cooking! 😋

How could I have a week of German food, without Saurerbraten? It’s probably the most famous meat dish from this beautiful country. As stated in the video below, this recipe takes planning, as you marinade the meat for 5 – 10 days (thus the name – SAUERbraten) The videos come in two parts: marinade and cooking/gravy. Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients: (For the complete recipe, follow this link – or watch the videos below)

  • Meat

    • 4 – 5 pounds beef roast

    Marinade

    • 1/3 small head celery root
    • 2 small parsnips
    • 4 medium sized carrots
    • 2 large onions
    • 1 tbsp. garlic paste
    • 4 cloves
    • 5 bay leaves
    • 7 whole all-spice
    • 10 whole juniper berries
    • 1 tsp. salt
    • 1 tsp. coarse black pepper
    • 1 tsp. sugar
    • 4 cups red wine
    • 2 cups red wine vinegar

    Gravy

    • 2 tbsp. Butterschmalz or lard
    • 2 large onions

About Tamara Hoerner (1161 Articles)
Welcome to The Purple Almond! My name is Tamara Hoerner. I am a student at Hawthorn University working toward a Master of Science in Health and Nutrition Education. For me, the name Purple Almond symbolizes “Good, nutritious, whole food bringing light and life to the body, awakening the inherent healing mechanisms within.” I'm all about getting back to the basics, good old fashioned traditional organic, whole food, the kind your great-grandmother used to eat. You'll find no processed foods here. Just good food to heal your whole body. I also believe a healthy body isn't just about food. Stress plays a large part in the physical health of our body. I, therefore, believe in using anything that relieves stress and heals the body, including: mediation, yoga, music, laughter, inspiration and helping others. You'll find all these included in my blog as well.

Nowadays beef is the go-to meat. But very traditional recipes (mainly around Cologne) use horse. Just in case you like some variation
