Kindness Counts: How to believe in yourself

In case you’re new to my blog, this is a series that started it’s life as a series called “Happiness is..” based on the book “HAPPINESS IS…500 THINGS TO BE HAPPY ABOUT.” In that series, I posted random quotes from that book, along with inspiring quotes and a prayer.

I have set that book aside in favor of a new book called: “Kindness Boomerang: How to Save the World (and Yourself) Through 365 Daily Acts“. This book, written by Orly Wahba, founder of the non-profit organization Life Vest Inside,  includes 365 random acts of kindness, along with a quote and Orly’s reflections for each kind act.


In this series, I select acts of kindness from the book to include in the article, along with the kind act quote and Orly’s reflections on that act. At the end are my thoughts on the kind act and an inspirational video. I hope you enjoy the latest in this series!

“Faith and belief in your capabilities aren’t things someone can give you. They must be developed, nurtured, and cultivated by no one else but you! Believing in yourself when times are good is a given. The question is whether you can withstand the urge to give up when the road ahead isn’t so clear, and it seems as though you are in the midst of a storm with no sign of refuge. Every person must and should go through their very own period of hardship and discovery bringing them to call on an inner strength they wouldn’t have found if not pushed to the limits. You may not have achieved the long list of accomplishments you thought you would have already crossed off, but never stop believing in your ability to reach your goal. Practice a bit of understanding with yourself and hold close to your heart the words of Walter D. Wintle, “Success begins with a fellow’s will. It’s all in a state of mind.”


My thoughts:

Believing in myself…wow…that’s a tall order! I’ve never been very good at that. The belief in myself has been nonexistent most of my life. I’ve had negative chatter in my head quite often, you know the type:

  • I’m not good enough
  • I’m not smart (Okay, that’s a mild version. Most of the time I just say I’m plain stupid.)
  • I’m ugly
  • What will other people think if I do this…

I could go on…but you get the idea. Being kind to others has always come quite easily, but being kind to myself, not so much. I think many people can relate to that.


But, I’ve had a good life. I grew up in a good home, wanting for nothing. My parents always made sure I had everything I ever needed or wanted. I’ve been married for 25+ years to the love of my life. I have 2 amazing kids. I’ve lived over seas and traveled the world. I am going to school to get a master’s degree in a field I love and for which my passion is boundless. (My extended family would say I’m a bit too passionate.) I’m on the President’s list with a 4.0 gpa. AND…I have you guys

My schooling gave me direction, a goal to shoot for, but this blog, and all of you are what turned things around for me. It gave me hope and confidence in myself. It gave me the courage to be myself. It helped me realize I have worth…I am smart…I don’t care what others think of me. But most of all, it helped me believe in myself.


The video

The inspirational video I found for this article is a Ted Talk called HOW TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF by: Jim Cathcart. Some of his inspiring words are in the above quotes. Here is part of the description from youtube:

“Jim Cathcart thought he would never make a difference. An average student from a working class family with no athletic or special skills, he expected an unremarkable existence. But one radio message in 1972 changed the direction of his life & authored his belief in his potential. Today, he’s a Hall of Fame Speaker, and has authored 16 books. While changing himself, Jim also discovered how to help others believe in themselves, too. “

This video, about 8 minutes long, is AMAZING and so inspiring. Jim is a wonderful speaker. He uses an acorn as an analogy for his lesson. Here are a few of his tips on HOW TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF:

  • Respect your nature – realize  your legacy.
    • You are not a biological coincidence. You were intentionally created for a purpose
    • Find out what you’re supposed to do with your life and do it as well as you can.
  • Know your nature. Know yourself…
    • How are you smart
    • what do you care about
    • what is your philosophy of life
  • Apply your nature. Nurture your nature.
    • You were born with the gift to make the world a better place
    • You are valuable.

So what will be your “radio program”?

What will be the one thing

that will change the course of your life…


Remember, ask yourself every day:

How would the person I’d like to be, do the things I’m about to do?
