Motivation Monday: The 5 Second Rule

Did you know that scientists have calculated the odds of you being born? The chances of you being born, into your exact life circumstances, are 1 in 400,000,000,000,000! (1) You are unique and  you have important things to do with your life!

Have you ever felt lazy or like a failure when you didn’t act on an idea or desire to change your life? According to Mel Robbins, in the TEDx Talk video below, your brain hates change and it will do anything to stop you from making changes in your life. If you are waiting for the right time, or waiting until you “feel like it”, Mel has a surprise for you: YOU’LL NEVER FEEL LIKE IT!

You can have ANYTHING you want in your life, and it’s  simple, but not easy. There are a few things you need to do to have the life you want:

  • You have to force yourself- Get out of your comfort zone. Force yourself to be uncomfortable.
  • Get out of your own head – “If you’re in your head, you’re behind enemy lines”  Follow your heart and your instincts, not your head. Remember, your brain hates change.
  • Overcome your feelings – Quit worrying about how you “feel” and start acting on what you want. Action conquers fear. LIVE BOUNDLESS!

What’s the final piece of advice for having everything you want?

The 5 second rule.

According to Mel, when you have an idea, you have exactly 5 seconds to act on your idea before your brain shuts it down. After 5 seconds, your brain steps in and comes up with all of the fear, self-doubt talk and reasons NOT to act on this new idea. Remember, your brain HATES change.

So, from now on, when you have an idea for positive change in your life, act on it in some small way immediately. Send a text/email, write a note, make a phone call, what ever you can do to put that idea into action before your brain steps in and puts the breaks on.
