“Someone believed in them today.”

As Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry was driving around his city, talking to panhandlers, he had an idea. Since there is always something to do throughout the city, Mayor Berry decided to bring work to these panhandlers, instead of trying to get these demoralized people to go out and look for work.

So he took an old 2006 van, fixed it up, painted it, hired a wonderful person the panhandlers would trust, to drive it. Then, he partnered with a local non-profit to help fill out forms and disperse funds, and THERE’S A BETTER WAY was born. The video below talks with the driver and a few of the panhandlers about this wonderful program.

Albuquerque has a sister program, which houses homeless people, called ALBUQUERQUE HEADING HOME.  This program helps house the chronically homeless and medically vulnerable on the streets of Albuquerque.
